INVEST, INNOVATE AND IMPROVE  WITH NAYDO

Dear NAYDO Members,

Today, development professionals are focused on building relationships and getting donors engaged in our Ys. A few years ago, we were more focused on asking and giving. Now, we invite donors to join in our mission, which creates a more personal and meaningful experience for them. It’s a partnership and investment of their time, passion and  resources, not simply a financial transaction. A donor’s engagement with the YMCA mission is what changes their giving experience.

It’s the same with NAYDO. We invite Y staff and volunteers to join, but what we really want is for each person to get involved. To be active, not passive. To share their experiences and expertise. To reach out when there is a challenge or question.

When our members understand that the time they invest in NAYDO connects them more deeply to the Y’s mission – and to their staff, board members, donors, volunteers, members, and other stakeholders – their experience changes.

I am energized and inspired by the work we accomplish together. NAYDO Council members are diligent in their committee work and other roles. Conference committee members and Host Y staff, all of whom volunteer their time, are well into planning an exceptional experience at NAYDO 2025.

I invite you—encourage you—to get more involved in NAYDO as we start a new membership year. Together, let’s make this the year you deepen the culture of philanthropy at your Y! Contact Mary Zoller to find the best fit for your time and interests. We must continue to meet the needs of our communities through philanthropy. Let’s join together and celebrate our success.

With gratitude,

Carolyn Grady, NAYDO Chair
SVP, Chief Development Officer, YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh

YMCA Capital Campaign Research Revealed
Presenter: Steven Shattuck, Director of Engagement, Capital Campaign Pro

How successful are capital campaigns? What is money usually being raised for? How much money comes from the board? Am I too small to do a capital campaign? And, how does a capital campaign impact our other fundraising efforts? NAYDO recently partnered with Capital Campaign Pro for groundbreaking research into how capital campaigns are planned and executed by YMCAs in the US and Canada, including those considering a future campaign, currently in a campaign, and who completed a campaign in the last two years. The webinar covers this exclusive research and will shed light on common questions and myths surrounding campaigns.

Government funding, including local, state, and federal grants, can be an important part of a YMCA’s fundraising strategy. But these applications are often complex, highly competitive, and require careful planning. Successful YMCAs develop a “runway” that includes identifying opportunities early, understanding trends in funding, developing relationships with awarding agencies and lawmakers, and preparing operations and administrative structures in advance to position for competitive applications.
