Message from the NAYDO Chair

ACCELERATING PHILANTHROPY IN OUR Ys

Dear NAYDO Members,

As the new Council chair, I appreciate the commitment to NAYDO by YMCA Canada and YMCA of the USA. With top-down support from Peter Dinsdale and Suzanne McCormick, both national offices are making NAYDO membership more accessible. They are providing funding to NAYDO to increase the financial assistance funds for membership dues.

Now, it is up to each Y to take advantage of this opportunity and make the most of their NAYDO membership. Ensuring all staff and volunteers can access year-round education, idea sharing and networking is essential.

NAYDO is not just for CDOs or C-suite leaders. It’s for staff at every level and in every department. It’s for branch and association board members and fundraising volunteers. It’s for young professionals so they develop the fundraising skills needed to advance their careers. It takes each of us to tap into our passion for the Y Movement and advance philanthropy in our Ys.

At its core, our philanthropic role, no matter our job title, is to build relationships, tell our personal Y story, and articulate the vision of our Y―how the Y can strengthen our neighbors, our community and our world.

Here’s how to get involved in NAYDO:
• Now that your Y has joined or renewed your association membership, make sure to help your staff and volunteers activate their memberships if they are new to NAYDO or new to your Y since last year...so share this email! My Y held a gift card drawing to focus everyone’s attention on activating their benefits and it worked like a charm!

• Participate in networks. Give young staff the professional development they seek and need with 10 networks and through applying for the Young Professionals Class of 2024.

• Attend virtual webinars. Organize brown bag viewing parties with key staff and volunteers.

• Host a virtual NAYDO Academy. Give your frontline staff a taste of NAYDO excellence at incredibly affordable prices.

• Become a Conference Committee (or sub-committee) volunteer.

• Share your NAYDO experience with your peers, your State Alliance and on LinkedIn.

Bottom line: Don’t wait for someone in your Y to ‘invite’ you to participate in NAYDO. Seize the initiative and discover how NAYDO can improve your personal and professional development.

Yours in philanthropy,
Carolyn Grady, NAYDO Chair
SVP, Chief Development Officer, YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh

NAYDO MEMBERSHIP FOR 2023-2024
Have you activated your benefits (Step 2)?

By Mary Zoller, NAYDO Operations and Conference Director

During the current annual enrollment period, Step 1 establishes your YMCA as a NAYDO Association Member for the new NAYDO Membership Year. Your association contact identified budget size, payment method, or need for financial assistance. To date, two-thirds of last year's members plus more than 40 new YMCAs have completed Step 1.

Step 2 involves activating the benefits of the staff and volunteers at your Y who will be using the NAYDO Membership by participating in virtual webinars and network events or attending the in-person conference. This step is how the database will recognize an email address for the conference member rate, as an applicant for conference assistance, or as a registrant for the 2023-2024 webinar series.

The system does NOT recognize Y names, so it is most important that NEW Members complete Step 2 so their email addresses will be valid as NAYDO members and your Y will be making the most of your NAYDO Membership. Renewing YMCAs who have staff or volunteers who did not activate their benefits last year also need to activate NOW. Reply to this email if you have questions about activating benefits.

New this year! Association Contacts who would like to view who from their Y has activated their benefits can request this access from Database Specialist Kathy Meehan by email or call 504 722 4248.

We Have a Winner!

Wayne Stump, CEO, of the Bloomsburg Area YMCA in Pennsylvania is the winner of the raffle. All who renewed or joined between July 14-31 were eligible. The prize is a free 2024 NAYDO Conference Registration, a value of $775. Congratulations!

2023 Giving USA: The Annual Report on Philanthropy for 2022
Understanding the Data and Gaining Insights for Your Development Decision-Making
Presenter: Gail Glasser, Senior Consultant, Lighthouse Counsel

Influence your Y's development plans with a robust set of data and insights.  Join Lighthouse Counsel senior consultant, Gail Glasser as she reviews data on the United States charitable sector as reported by Giving USA 2023: The Annual Report on Philanthropy for the Year 2022.

The session will review the top findings for overall charitable giving. Information will be shared on where the donations came from - individuals, foundations, bequests, and corporations - and where the money went across charitable subsectors. Factors that impacted nonprofits, both challenges and opportunities, will be highlighted.

Participants will gain insights on how to be data-informed in their fundraising decision-making. We will look at our donors' desire to leverage their assets and give in different ways. Use the information to compare your Y's analytics and consider expanding options for donors to give to your local Y. The session will stress best practices for using data to inform how we listen to and communicate with our donors.

Learning outcomes:
1. Understand 2022 Giving USA data compared to historical philanthropic trends
2. Leverage Giving USA data and benchmark your own Y data
3. Garner best practices that can be immediately applied to focus your efforts, educate your stakeholders, and plan for the latest philanthropic trends
